When to go to Antarctica?
At the heart of the Arctic continent, during the winter in the months from June to August, temperatures vary between 113°F and 158°F. During the 2 mildest months – January and February – average temperatures rise to 86°F. It was on the Russian base of Vostok that the lowest temperature on record of 192°F was recorded in 1983. The wind is very strong on this continent ; its speed is reduced from within the plateau but along the coast it is greater at between 18.6 and 43.5mph (30-70km/h). Peak winds exceeding 198mph (320km/h) have even been recorded at the Dumont d’Urville base. Along the coasts, temperatures are less extreme, and during the months from December to March temperatures can exceed 32°F. It is also during this time that cruises headed to Antarctica are organised. Rainfall is uncommon on this continent where it snows very little.
