When to go to Bhutan?

A small kingdom locked between China and India, Bhutan experiences different types of climate depending on the altitude, which is alpine in the north, temperate in the centre and tropical in the south. In Thimpu, the capital known for its Buddhist sites, maximum temperatures vary between 50°F in January and 77°F in August.

In the south of bhutan, where the altitude is at its lowest, the climate is of the tropical variety. Winters here are particularly mild with maximum temperatures close to 73°F, and there are very hot and humid summers, with temperatures which exceed 86°F. Between June and September there is the monsoon period with very heavy rainfall. During these few months, the hot air filled with moisture makes it hard to breathe, and it is not recommended to go and explore Bhutan in this season.
In the mountainous regions of the north where the altitude often exceeds 3000m, the climate is harsher with very cold, rather dry, sunny winters, with the thermometer not going past the 39°F mark during the day. Summers here are cooler than in the south of the country, with temperatures which don’t exceed 55°F.
In the middle of the country, where the altitude is between 1500 and 3000m, the climate is more moderate. The winters are cold and dry and the summers are hot and wet, but with less heavy rainfall than in the southern regions.

To go and visit the most environmentally friendly country in the world, the best times are the months of October/November – before the cold winter temperatures and after the monsoon period – and in spring between March and May when the climate is warmer. It is also at this time of year that you’ll be able to attend a ‘tshechu’, which is a typical Bhutan dance festival. For trekking, you should also make these times of year your first choice (the end of the monsoon and the start of spring) in order to avoid muddy terrain and enjoy clear skies.
