When to go to Denmark?

The climate in Denmark is of the oceanic variety and typically has long, cold and wet winters. Temperatures in January rarely go beyond 39°F during the day. In summer, temperatures are warm, with 71°F in Copenhagen during the day in the month of August, but they quickly cool down as soon as night falls. July and August are often haunted by frequent rain.

Contrary to what you may think, the winters in Denmark are not that cold. Minimum temperatures are close to 32°F. During the daytime, the temperature is 39°F on average in January and February. The sky is grey the majority of the time and it is not uncommon to not see the sun appear for several days. December and January are very rainy months. In addition to this, there is wind which blows in the form of heavy gusts. Add to that the fact that the days become very short – as the sun rises around 8.30am and sets at around 3.30pm – and this time of year is not really recommended to visit the country.
Spring in Denmark stays cool with temperatures in April which don’t go beyond 51°F. It is starting in the month of June that temperatures start to get warm, with maximum temperatures at 66°F. The sky becomes less grey and the sunshine makes greater appearances. During these months, rainfall is at its lowest for the whole year.
People look forward to the summer. Temperatures are rather warm, with 71°F in Copenhagen in August, but these are a lot cooler as soon as night falls, dropping to 55°F. Having subsided in spring, the rain returns in July and August. You will therefore need to bring a waterproof jacket and warm jumper in your suitcase.
As soon as autumn rears its head, the sky becomes greyer and the sun becomes a rarity. Temperatures go down to 53°F during the daytime and drop to 42°F at night.
Denmark is not the ideal destination to go for a swim in the sea! The water temperature is 37°F in January and barely reaches 64°F in August. In the absence of swimming, you’ll be able to take a walk on the superb fine sand beaches, or along the giant sand dunes and enjoy the best of nature.

To explore the country, the ideal season runs from the end of May to the start of September, with a preference for the month of June which is less wet than July and August. The temperatures will be warm but don’t forget to take a good jumper as it quickly cools down at night.
