Chasing the Sun

Guide of the best sunny destinations in July

In July your holidays are just around the corner and you already picture yourself touching the warm sand and enjoying the swirling waves on the beach... Even if the Mediterranean basin remains the favourite destination for July tourists , it's not the only place to go. As proof , here's a world tour of top destinations where you can already hum the air of summer holidays on the sunny beach....

France: of course !

The urge for a summer getaway increases like the temperatures. The French coast, bordered by a myriad of beaches each more beautiful than the next, is therefore a natural choice. Apart from a few rare weather mood swings, the question of good weather is no longer relevant in July when the sun reigns supreme on the Côte d'Azur, Corsica, the Arcachon basin and the island of Ré. The time passes peacefully by in these places where you can just breathe the refreshing sea air and enjoy the sunshine, along with swimming, lunching on terraces and napping under the shade of the century-old olive trees..

On a Mediterranean Island

The blue sky merges with the sea and sets the tone for your summer trip to the Mediterranean islands. You can wander around with delight through the maze of narrow streets in Santorini, laze around on the divine beaches of Formentera and discover the irresistible charm of the Dolce Vita at a time when the sun revives the baroque facades of Syracuse with its golden light rays. Charming cities, stunning architecture and striking translucent waters: no one can resist the call of a seaside stopover in these Mediterranean island paradises.

Southern Europe

In Southern Europe, the sun always has the last word in July. It sets the pace on the shores of the Iberian Peninsula, that revives the sands of southern Italy and finally shines a thousand majestic lights on the sea foam and horizon before the sun set. But the sun also means crowds, sweltering heat and burning concrete which are not so attractive to travellers! All you have to do is go a few miles to enjoy the sea breeze, the evergreen undershrub, the shaded plots or the sea spray wrapping you in a peaceful and soothing atmosphere.
Direction Apulia, the Costa de la Luz and the end of the Algarve, or maybe of the world....

Northern Africa

No more watching endless weather forecasts... On the beaches of North Africa, in July, the blue sky is a given and the permanent sunshine, will both quench your thirst for seaside delights. Sea lovers should meet in Essaouira or Dakhla to familiarize themselves with the invigorating ocean waves in the purest spirit of soul surfing. Relaxation seekers can spread their towels on the hot sands of Taghazout, Djerba, Hammamet or the Kerkennah islands. Wherever you go, top up on your high protection factor sunscreen as the sun in these latitudes is very strong.

In waters off Africa

To combine sun and beaches in a different and exotic setting, you have to sail along the African coast. On the Atlantic side, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands have perfect temperatures. The dry season that hovers over Zanzibar, Mauritius and the Reunion Island promises unforgettable stays by the seashore. Imagine yourself as an adventurer in a setting made up out of different shades of blue from the lagoons to the sky. Picture yourself seated comfortably on the terrace of your bungalow in the middle of this beautiful setting. What better place to let yourself be lulled by the sweet sound of the waves coming and going...

The epicentre of the Indonesian archipelago benefits from a favourable microclimate and is situated on the opposite to Asia, which is going through the monsoon. As a result, you will wake up in Bali, in the middle of the dry season! In July, the water temperature oscillates around 29°C/84°F, the sunshine is at its best... Enough to seriously have to hesitate between taking a stroll among the undulating rice paddies or having a well-deserved relaxing moment on the beach of Jimbaran. Or perhaps you would prefer a trip to Flores and its volcanoes, desert islets and lush jungles? Head off to the small islands of the Sonde, and to the Indonesian sun.

Santa Barbara beaches, Malibu surfers, Venice beach sportsmen and San Diego sunshine are all sources that fuel the imagination... Yet, far from being limited to their cinematographic decor, California's beaches incarnate like no other the beach culture of the Golden State. From long stretches of fine sand, hipster dens, secret coves and surfing suited beaches, the Pacific Ocean is the perfect setting for your trip to the American West. Why not take the opportunity to catch the wave heading towards the Hawaiian archipelago? Clear waters, coves, vast beaches of white and black sand, palm trees dancing in the wind, everything to please nature lovers !

In Oceania

The luxurious vegetation, the fragrant tiara flowers, the fabulous waterfalls, the different shades of the blue sea and the astonishing green of the mountains... Nothing can prepare you for the visual and sensory shock provided by the islands of French Polynesia, set in the immensity of the ocean. From Bora Bora to Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine, you are at the end of the world but certainly not at the end of your emotions. In July, there's no need for Insta filters or Photoshop ! Fortunately, the sun also shines on Heiva, the huge Polynesian culture festival. Songs, dances, canoe races and walking on fire shows add to the hypnotic charm of this destination.

Destinations you should avoid in July

Unless you prefer rainwater over seawater, avoid Asia in general. Also the Arabian Peninsula if you can't cope with very high temperatures, or the Southern Hemisphere if you don't like the extreme cold of the austral winter. In the Caribbean zone, temperatures remain high but rain and wet weather can play spoilsport. Finally, if you don't like intense heat avoid the shores of the Red Sea where the mercury rises into the red.
